This is the entrance to the genocide memorial of Murambi, near Butare. One leaves the main road and soon drives onto a promontory holding an unfinished set of edifices that were to be a school. Except from where the road came, the huge natural platform upon which we stand falls precipitously on all sides, as if we were on a sacrificial pyramid. Here 50,000 Tutsi, panicked by the onrushing wave of killings aginst them, were told by the authorities to find shelter. Instead they were starved and then systematically slaughtered with machetes and blunt instruments. Three survivors, now gatekeepers of this memorial, greeted us.
